A few introductory notes on the full list below. Wind and solar power are such small markets that even a tiny nominal increase in those industries’ revenue will look like high-percentage growth. The five companies with markets greater than $30 billion on this list are VoIP, E-Commerce, Biotech, Video Games, Correctional Facilities (esp. state governments offloading costs of imprisonment to private facilities), and Internet Publishing. “Forecast growth” projects average yearly growth for each year between 2010 and 2016.

THE RISE OF DIGITAL VOICE

Think of Skype or Google Voice. These technologies transmit voice, or other communications, across the Internet rather than over a telephone network. But Skype and Google Voice command barely 3 percent of the total U.S. market in VoIP. Where is the real growth in digital voice coming from?

It’s coming from cable. There are three broad categories of VoIP. First, there is “peer-to-peer” VoIP, like Skype, which connects two callers on two computers over the Internet. Second, there is virtual VoIP like Vonage, where a special phone turns your calls into an Internet signal that rings on another person’s phone. Third, there is cable VoIP like Comcast XFINITY, which delivers Internet calls over a private cable network.

By bundling VoIP services with internet and TV, three cable-based VoIP operators, Comcast, Time Warner and Cox, have seized more than half the digital voice industry. Between Comcast and Time Warner, 12 million households were using digital voice services in 2010.

“The rise of VoIP is the death of the land line,” said Casey Thormahlen, a senior analyst from IBISWorld. “Between cable providers like Comcast using digital voice technology and companies making inroads in the mobile market, like Vonage, we’re going to see a huge technological shift.”

The corporate market accounts for only a fifth of the VoIP industry. Thormahlen sees this as a big opportunity for the Microsoft-Skype alliance that was forged last week. “Businesses already get good rates from telecom companies,” he said, but if they’re really looking to cut communications costs, firms might switch to a high-end office product from the MicroSkype team.

Although Cable-delivered VoIP dominates the landscape today (see the graph to the left) tomorrow’s growth might come from non-cable providers. In particular, mobile VoIP is on the cusp of a major revolution, IBIS predicts. The popularity of Android gives Google a platform to launch a big cheap mobile VoIP campaign. Vonage World already offers customers unlimited calling to more than 60 countries for $25, according to a report from IBIS. As the quality of online calls increases, walking and talking over the Internet will seem less like a cheapskate’s effort to sacrifice quality calls for slim phone bills, and more like the new normal.

As IBIS concludes in its proprietary report on the digital voice industry, shared exclusively with The Atlantic: “VoIP services do not perform well on narrow-band internet connections, making the penetration of broadband internet technologies a prerequisite to VoIP success. According to an April 2009 study by the Pew Research Center, 63.0% of Americans have home broadband access, a 15 percentage-point increase over 2008. This leaves significant growth potential for the VoIP Providers industry.”

NEW YORK – Microsoft Corp. said Tuesday that it has agreed to buy the popular Internet telephone service Skype SA for $8.5 billion in the biggest deal in the software maker’s 36-year history.

Buying Skype gives Microsoft access to a user base of about 170 million people who log in to Skype every month, using the Internet and Skype usernames as a complement to the traditional phone network and its phone numbers.

Microsoft said it will marry Skype’s functions to its Xbox game console, Outlook email program and Windows smartphones. All of these platforms already have other options for Internet calling, but the addition of Skype users would expand their reach, making them more useful.

Microsoft said it will continue to support Skype on other software platforms.

The sellers include eBay Inc. and private equity firms Silver Lake and Andreessen Horowitz.

Skype users made 207 billion minutes of voice and video calls last year. Most of that usage is free calling from computer to computer, which has made it difficult for the service to make money since entrepreneurs Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis started the company in 2003. An average of about 8.8 million customers per month, or just over 5 percent of the user base, pay to use Skype to call out to the regular phone network.

The vast majority of paying Skype users is in Europe, where high country-to-country rates for traditional phone calls make Skype more popular than in the U.S., where state-to-state calling is cheap.

Skype is the largest provider of international calling services in the world, surpassing any single phone company, according to research firm TeleGeography.

Skype lost $7 million on revenue of $860 million last year, according to papers that the company has filed since announcing its intentions last summer to launch an initial public offering of stock. The IPO was later put on hold. Skype’s long-term debt, net of cash, was $544 million at the end of 2010.

The Skype takeover tops Microsoft’s biggest previous acquisition — a $6 billion purchase of the online ad service aQuantive in 2007.

Microsoft said Skype will become a new business division headed by Skype CEO Tony Bates, who will report directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

Although it makes billions from its computer software, Microsoft has been accustomed to losing money on the Internet in a mostly futile attempt to catch up to Google Inc. in the lucrative online search market. Microsoft got so desperate that it made a $47.5 billion bid to buy Yahoo Inc. three years ago, but withdrew the offer after Yahoo balked. Yahoo is now worth about half of what Microsoft offered.

Microsoft can well afford to buy Skype: On March 31, it had a cash hoard of $50.2 billion.

Microsoft would be Skype’s second large-company owner. EBay bought Skype for $2.6 billion in 2005, but its attempt to unite the phone service with its online shopping bazaar never worked out. It wound up selling a 70 percent stake in Skype to a group of investors led by private equity firms Silver Lake and Andreessen Horowitz for $2 billion 18 months ago.

Besides eBay, Silver Lake and Andreessen Horowitz, Skype’s other major shareholders are Joltid and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.

Kwickconnect is a newly released PC dialer from TalkFree. Please read on for my thoughts about it.

PROS:

• The dialer’s interface is straightforward and simple-to-use.
• The tabs are clearly marked for easy navigation and the dial pad has a large number display with voice/volume controls.
• like mobeefree’s PC dialer, but unlike most others, kwickconnect allows you to add funds to your account instantly using a coupon.
• Rates are based off TalkFree wholesale mark ups by resellers – for wholesale rates go to the TalkFree reseller sign up page.

CONS:

• SMS functionality is still under development, but their customer support has assured me that it will be out soon.
• Can not sign up from the dialer itself.
• Can not add contacts.

OVERALL: 8/10

Similar to mobeefree, kwickconnect is a very good PC dialer. TalkFree has been trying to improve on their previous pc to phone dialer, BlackDialer, and it looks like they’re off to a great start with kwickconnect.

Launched in September of 2009, Rynga is one of the many VoIP carrier brands (33 at last count) created by Betamax. Here are my thoughts about their services.

PROS:

• Free mobile and PC dialers - both of which have attractive, user-friendly interfaces
• Free call destinations
• “Freedays” of calling
• Language support

CONS:

• it took over ten tries to register an account
• Rynga’s payment system is constantly malfunctioning – it took nearly a week to buy credit
• not to mention, their resellers are unresponsive to my credit requests
• they keep reducing my number of “freedays” – I went from 120 to 40 in just a couple days!
• currency denominations are in Euros
• at times, my dialers simply won’t connect
• terrible customer service – perhaps the worst I’ve ever encountered. They ignore your inquiries, and there’s no number to call directly
• AND maybe worst of all, their call rates fluctuate!  In the week that I’ve been using them, they raised their call rates to Nepal mobile from .1160 to .1190 cents

OVERALL: 3/10

My experience with Rynga was horrible, but apparently I’m not the only one who feels that way (I’ll also refer you to the comments section of this blog post).  I could deal with the service delays, faulty systems, etc., but deceiving your customers with “freeday” tricks and raising rates on Fridays (when call traffic is at its highest) is totally unacceptable.

mobeefree is TalkFree.Com’s newest retail service brand that was launched in Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia on February of this year. Here is a review of their recently released PC dialer.

PROS:

• The dialer’s interface is straightforward and simple-to-use.
• The tabs are clearly marked for easy navigation and the dial pad has a large number display with voice/volume controls.
• mobeefree’s PC dialer allows you to add funds to your account INSTANTLY (unlike most other dialers).
• Cheap rates. Of all the VoIP service providers I’ve found, mobeefree offers the lowest call rates to Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. And even though their rates to India aren’t exactly the cheapest, you do get 8 FREE MINUTES TO CALL INDIA just by signing up.

CONS:

• SMS functionality is still under development, but their customer support has assured me that it will be out soon.
• Can not sign up from the dialer itself.

OVERALL: 8/10

The only thing preventing me from giving mobeefree’s pc dialer a perfect score is it’s lack of SMS capabilities, but here’s the bottom line: if you need to make phone calls from your computer, mobeefree’s PC dialer is one of the easiest and cheapest options on the VoIP market. And to me, that also makes them one of the best.
